An Old Neighborhood Building behind the Spiegel's House

Just a series of snapshots to an neighborhood old building behind the Spiegel's House during an afternoon day. This building is identified as a house number 12A, currently situated between Garuda and Kedasih Street, not far from the "Peek House".

This is a two-storeys building with rich detailing on upper floor facade with red brick work arches, wooden transoms, ornamental metal brackets and small balcony. It seem the wrought iron brackets are remaining parts belong to the lost overhung structures that originally covered the windows. The building looks well-preserved, even though its actually located across a 'slum' houses and directly located behind the famous unpreserved Spiegel's House.

  1. Hi -again I am enjoying your posts.Curious about the "Famous" Spiegel house. Is this the previous home of H. Spiegel (Herman Spiegel was my great-grandfather, part-owner of Toko Spiegel - early 1900's) If so,I believe I have a photo of the front facade from approx. 1905. I would love to any additional info you may have on the home or his business.

  2. Yes, I think the owner of Spiegel's House currently situated in Semarang Old City Conservation Area was Herman Spiegel (see also my blog post dated 24 April 2011). This old house I described in this posting is a neighborhood building directly situated beside the Spiegel's House.
